Impetigo, a kind of bacterial infection that forms yellowish crusts on the surface of the face, arms or legs. This may be itchy or kind of painful.

It is highly contagious and can spread among people. The best way of diagnosis includes an appearance on the face.

Fever is uncommon in impetigo. It mainly affects children and infant.

  • Impetigo Foot: It usually affects the infants and children and there is kind of sores seen on feet.
  • Impetigo in Mouth: A kind of canker sores is developed in the mouth and are spread through a virus.
  • Impetigo on Legs: This is the most affected area and rash remains prevalent until the person undergoes treatment.

Bullous Impetigo

This is a type of skin infection that is mainly seen in newborn, with bullae. This is caused by Exfoliative toxin A.

The first type of symptoms is generally rashes around the nose and lips. This infection is, however, again subdivided into two classes- impetigo and bullous impetigo.

Staphylococcus aureus is the cause of creating an excess amount of toxins. Near about 30% of the cases are related to bullous impetigo.

This is prevalent on neck, axilla or the diaper region. This condition is not dangerous. It generally gets healed without scarring. The rare form gets into Cellulitis.

How long does Impetigo Last?

Non-Bullous Impetigo takes much less time and gets cured on its own in almost two weeks. bullous impetigo rather takes time but both of them responds to treatment.

The treatment continues for almost 7 to 10 days but children are not contagious after 48 hours of proper treatment.

Is Impetigo Contagious?

It is quite evident to quote that Impetigo is highly contagious. The infection spreads quickly by direct touch or shared items (towels, napkins or other items) with the infected person.

The towels of the infected person should be washed separately.

The situation remains intense until the rashes are cleared and get away from skin or else you should have proper antibiotic treatment for a cycle of 2 days to see the improvement.

Impetigo Treatment

The most common treatment for the problem is Antibiotic treatment however gentle wash can prevent the situation from spread among different people.

The sores should be covered in order to prevent them from spreading. Topical antibiotic creams are quite effective. Bactroban (Mupirocin), this ointment is quite popular to heal the skin and cure the problem.

Other Prevention or kind of remedy could be children who are little older could take a bath where lukewarm water filled with ¼ th cup of bleach.

This helps in reducing bacteria on the skin. Other oral medicines include – flucloxacillin or erythromycin.

Natural Remedy: Tea Tree Oil, Coconut Oil, Olive Oil, and Garlic.

Impetigo Treatment over the Counter       

There is no over the counter treatment for impetigo. However, it should be noted that over the counter anti-bacterial ointments actually makes the situation affect more badly.

Impetigo Cream   

Creams like fusidic acid or mupirocin (Bactroban), is used to serve the purpose.
