A ring of muscle called the Lower Esophageal Sphincter (LES) exists at the junction of the esophagus and stomach. This muscle closes your esophagus as soon as food passes through the stomach.
If this muscle is weak or doesn’t tighten properly the acid, and other stomach contents from your stomach can move backward into your esophagus. This is known as acid reflux or heartburn.
WHAT DOES HEARTBURN FEEL LIKE IN PREGNANCY?
Heartburn happens when acid from your stomach bubbles up and irritates the lining of your food pipe, causing pain or discomfort. You’ll have a burning sensation, behind your chest.
The sensation might start in your gut and move up to the esophagus. It also might become severe when you lie down or bend over.

It also slows down your digestive system and causes heartburn. Progesterone along with the pressure of growing baby increases the possibility that acid in the gut will move to its way towards the esophagus.

For long relief- your doctor may prescribe some H-2-receptor blockers. These are the medicines to treat excess acid production in the stomach. e.g. cimetidine, famotidine (famocid 20mg tab), or ranitidine (Zinetac 150 tab).
FOOD HABITS TO REDUCE HEARTBURN DURING PREGNANCY
